Oregon Trail-Bear Lake Scenic Byway
Red Rock Pass, ID

This site has both geological and historical significance. Its geological history goes back to the times of the inland sea known as Lake Bonneville. The Lake actually overflowed at this site about 14,500 years ago when the earth that held the water in gave way. The only remnants of Lake Bonneville today is the Great Salt Lake.

In much more recent history this site was near the home of a man named Jefferson Hunt who led the Mormon Battalion in the Mexican War. Concrete stairs lead to the Captain Hunt monument and a beautiful overlook of the landscape and its formations. Down below, on the other side of the hill, visitors may notice a small cemetery where Hunt and his family are buried.
