Bighorn Scenic Byway
Connor Battlefield State Historic Site, WY

During the Powder River Expedition in 1865, General P.E. Connor engaged in a battle with an Arapaho village of Black Bear and Old David in the Battle of Tongue River. The Expedition was an attempt by the army to punish the Indians for earlier attacks on whites and to protect lines of travel and communication. The village of perhaps 500 persons was surprised by Connor and Colonel J.H. Kidd. Connor Battlefield is now a park that surrounds the monument and features a lush green landscape, perfect for picnics and play. Visitors enjoy listening to the rush of the Tongue River while they fish and watching the wildlife that make this park home.
