Cascade Loop
Lake Chelan, WA
Lake Chelan is fjord-like, although it is actually two lakes. This clear glacier-fed lake is nestled in a gorge considered to be one of the deepest in North America. At 1486 feet, this is the 3rd deepest lake in the United States. Narrow and 55 miles long, the lake slices into the Cascade Mountains. Waterfalls plunge 8000 feet, surrounding sheer mountain faces with misty sprays.
Chelan's lower end is beautified by apple orchards, green hills, wide sandy beaches, and lakefront resorts. The upper lake is quite remote, accessible only by boat or floatplane. Its surroundings are marked by looming granite cliffs, shadowy evergreen forests, and rocky snowcapped peaks. Stehikin is on the edge of the lakes furthest reaches.
