White Pass Scenic Byway
Tieton River, WA

Fall is the best time to run the Tieton River. In fact, it's the only time to take that white water rafting trip, and not because of the changing colors. The release of Rimrock Dam sets the Tieton River roaring and it only happens in September. In the vanishing days of summer, the Tieton River is one of the only places with dependable rapids. Kayakers from across the state come running for a last rush down the river.

The river is a solid Class III+ because it is small and narrow with the steepest gradient in the state. This sets the scene for what every rafter and kayaker desires, fast moving water and big waves. The river will whip water enthusiasts through High Noon and the Waffle Wall, never losing its zip. Towering basalt cliffs and stands of oak forests offer a nice view if the river permits. The Tieton River is recommended for the experienced only and because of the short season, if reservations are necessary, they should be made early.

If rafting isn't your type of fun, try camping in the beautiful Washington wilderness. Surround yourself in the beauty of nature and enjoy the sweet sound of the Tieton River.
