Special Considerations
As with any major mountain pass, care should be taken in wintertime. US 12 is a two-lane, rural highway and travelers should always wait for safe conditions to pass, or use courtesy to allow other traffic to pass them when appropriate.
Restrictions
Two-wheel drive passenger vehicles are accommodated along the entire byway, with no concerns or restrictions.
Seasons
- Best Time to Drive
Recreational opportunities are available year-round on the byway: summer hiking, winter skiing, or fishing all year.
- High Season
The byway is busiest in the summer, when travel to Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens peaks.
