The Great River Road on both banks of the Mississippi River below Baton Rouge to New Orleans contains a wealth of plantation homes, many of which feature overnight accommodations and several offer elegant dining. Enjoy a riverboat ride to the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans or take the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar. Theres a variety of cruises on the Mississippi River, including excursions through the bayous and a stop at the Chalmette National Battlefield

Special Considerations
The Great River Road in Louisiana is part of a 3,000 mile network of federal, state, and county roads on both sides of the Mississippi River from Canada to the Gulf. You might want to follow it to visit the historical, cultural and recreational qualities of other states besides Louisiana.
