  • Apache Rocks and Turtleback Mountain

    Apache Rocks and Turtleback Mountain (NM)

    The huge rocks clustered together provided shelter for the Apaches, and before them the prehistoric Mogollon-Mimbres people.

    Location:

    Located in Ralph Edward Park near downtown Truth or Consequences.

  • Beaverhead

    Beaverhead (NM)

    This site, located in the Beaverhead valley has remained mostly undisturbed for hundreds of years. With arrangement, take a special excursion.

    Location:

    Located at the west end of NM 59.

  • Caballo Lake State Park

    Caballo Lake State Park (NM)

    Caballo Lake, which is man-made, sits at the foot of the Caballo mountains, and it provides year-round adventures.

    Distance from byway: 14 mi / 22.5 km
    Travel time: 25 minutes
    Directions:

    From NM 152, take NM 187 south for approximately 14 miles.

  • Caballo Mountain Vista

    Caballo Mountain Vista (NM)

    The rugged desert Caballo Mountains were known to the Apaches as a place where an abundance of Mescal grew.

    Location:

    Located along NM 187 at mile marker 28.

  • Chloride Ghost Town

    Chloride Ghost Town (NM)

    A few people still live in this old mining town where about 25-30 buildings can still be seen.

    Travel time: 8 minutes
    Directions:

    From Highway 52 in Winston, drive southwest on Forest Road for about 4 miles.

  • Continental Divide Crossing (NM)

    At an elevation of 7,670 feet, the Byway crosses the continental divide.

  • Cuchillo

    Cuchillo (NM)

    This small town was once an important stop along the stage line; today, local businesses add to the historic flavor of the town.

    Location:

    Located along NM 52 near mile marker 6.

  • Elephant Butte Dam (NM)

    The Elephant Butte Lake, impounded by the dam, is the largest lake in New Mexico, supplying water through southern New Mexico and into Texas.

    Located along NM 195 at mile marker 3.

  • Elephant Butte Lake State Park

    Elephant Butte Lake State Park (NM)

    The most popular lake in New Mexico, Elephant Butte is the largest lake in the state. It is 43 miles long with more than 200 miles of shoreline. The mild climate of the area makes this park a great year-round destination.

    Located northeast of the junction of NM 52 and NM 51.

  • Emory Pass Vista

    Emory Pass Vista (NM)

    A beautiful view of Caballo Lake and most of Sierra County await at the top of Emory Pass.

    Located just east of Emory Pass on NM 152 at mile marker 31.8.
