Elephant Butte Dam, NM
Elephant Butte Dam, constructed between 1911 and 1916, was an engineering marvel at the time. The hydroelectric plant was added during the 1930s. Elephant Butte Lake, impounded by the dam, is the largest lake in New Mexico with a capacity in excess of two million acre feet, and provides water for irrigation along the Rio Grande through southern New Mexico and into Texas.
