Special Considerations

Never explore the caves alone. Bring a flashlight, and a hat to cover your head. You might also consider a scarf to protect your lungs and something to protect delicate equipment like cameras from the yellow ochre mineral dust found on cave walls and formations, and in the air.

There is a 10-minute hike to reach the caves, and the entrance is accessible only by a wooden spiral staircase.

Visitors should consider visiting the Sandia Man display at the Museum of Archaeology and Material Culture in Cedar Crest first, to gain a greater appreciation of the significance of these caves.

Restrictions

Several areas of the cave are blocked off, but visitors can explore the main area. Do not explore the cave alone!
