Visitor Services

A US Post Office is also located inside the Steel Visitor Center. Other visitor services are quite limited during the winter. For lodging, evening meals, or gasoline during the winter, you will need to drive outside of the park to the communities of Ft. Klamath, Chiloquin, Prospect, or Diamond Lake. There is also a ski patrol in the park, made up of local volunteers.

Mountain bikes are allowed on paved roads, the Pinnacles Trail, and Grayback Drive. Hiking is permitted only on the Cleetwood Trail.

Camping is available in the National Forest during the summer months. Backcountry camping permits are available.

The historic Crater Lake Lodge is open during the summer season. Motel units at Mazama Village are also available from June-September.

Special Considerations

Be sure to have adequate clothing, extra food and water, traction devices, other emergency equipment, and a knowledge of winter weather and road conditions. Keep a safe distance from the edge of the rim. Entering the caldera is extremely dangerous and strictly prohibited. Please use plowed parking lots and do not park along the roadways. Overnight car camping in parking lots is prohibited.

Do not use the roadside snow banks as snow play areas. Do not feed or disturb wildlife. Pets must be kept on leashes, and are not allowed on ski trails. Free back country permits are required for all overnight trips.

Road conditions vary, but during the winter can often be icy or snowpacked. Be alert to current driving conditions and come prepared with traction tires or devices. Gasoline is not available in the park until late May.
