Special Considerations
Many people visiting Rocky Mountain National Park from lower elevations experience symptoms of Mountain Sickness. Common symptoms include: headache, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, and rapid heart beat. High altitude can aggravate preexisting medical conditions and can in some instances become life threatening. Symptoms can be prevented or lessened by drinking several quarts of water per day, eating frequently, getting plenty of rest, and avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine. If Mountain Sickness symptoms are experienced, decending to lower elevations often helps alleviate problems. For more information on Mountain Sickness, consult with a Rocky Mountain National Park Ranger.
Restrictions
Closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. Temporary closures due to snow and/or high winds also occur occasionally during the summer months.
