Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway
Cañon City, CO
Settled in 1860 along the Arkansas River, Cañon City is now the largest community on the byway. In that year the Rudd Family became the first family to settle the new area. Their cabin can still be toured by guests on the byway. Cañon City includes many restaurants, shops, and motels as well as two museums. Other places of interest in Cañon City include:
- The Royal Gorge Route Railroad:
One of the many historic sites featured in Cañon City is the Royal Gorge Route. Trains leave the Santa Fe Depot year-round for the two-hour, 24-mile excursion through the Royal Gorge. - The Santa Fe Depot:
The Santa Fe Depot was built in 1914. It is now the place for visitors to purchase tickets for the Royal Gorge Railroad. Additional features include a gift shop and restaurant. - The Dinosaur Depot: A small museum dedicated to the rich history of the Garden Park Fossil Area, The Dinosaur Depot houses exhibits, specimens, and a fossil preparation laboratory.
Cañon City offers several historic and recreational activities to travelers. Be sure to discover a little more about the history of the city and surrounding areas. Enjoy community events like the Music & Blossom Festival, and during the summer, enjoy old fashioned entertainment in Cañon City's Park.
