Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway
Shelf Road, CO
This section of road, perched high above Fourmile Creek, has made for an unforgettable ride since the days of its construction in 1892. It was the first road built from the Arkansas Valley into the Cripple Creek Mining District. Travelers who drive along the byway can still see the tollkeeper's cabin in the canyon bottom. The tollkeeper climbed up the hill to collect tolls each time a wagon or stagecoach passed. There is no toll on the road today, but the road remains unpaved and provides an old-fashioned ride.
