Mount Evans Scenic Byway
Colorado School of Mines/Edgar Experimental Mine, CO

Today the Edgar Mine is used as an underground classroom for students from the Colorado School of Mines, but in the 1870s this mine produced silver, gold, lead, and copper. This was the time of the great Rocky Mountain Gold Rush, and it is only one of the many mines in the nearby communities of Black Hawk, Central City, and Georgetown that felt the effects of this rush. This mine gives students from the Colorado School of Mines the chance to get hands on experience in underground mine surveying, geological mapping, mine ventilation field studies, and a wide array of other subjects.
