Most of the byway's visitor services are in Idaho Springs.

Special Considerations
- Bring warm clothing and sunscreen.
- The summit is open Memorial Day through Labor Day only.
- Sudden changes in the weather are not uncommon on the alpine tundra.
- You may experience shortness of breath due to the high elevation. Above the treeline there is only 2/5 of the oxygen available at sea level.
- Lightning strikes are a constant summer hazard in the treeless environment.
- Expect at least a 15-degree difference in temperature between Idaho Springs and the summit of Mt. Evans.
- A fee is charged for the upper section of the byway (past Echo Lake) to help maintain this road.

The road is typically closed for the winter.
