Silver Thread Scenic Byway
Lake San Cristobal, CO

Over 700 years ago, as a result of heavy rains, weak volcanic tuff and breccia on the southern side of Mesa Seco began to slide down the mountainside. This event blocked the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River and created Lake San Cristobal. This lake is the second largest natural lake in the state. While there is a second earthflow that began 350 years ago, visitors do not need to worry. The area has excellent fishing and camp spots for recreational adventure.
