Divide Road runs 100 miles (161 km) over the top of the Uncompahgre Plateau to its southern end in Ridgway. Forested with Ponderosa Pine, Colorado Spruce and Aspen, the Uncompahgre National Forest provides excellent recreational opportunities as well as watershed, summer cattle grazing and other natural resources. Adventurous UTBW travelers can take a three-mile drive up the steep switchbacks of Divide Road to the old Taylor Granite Quarry where they will be rewarded with a stunning view of Unaweep Canyon. On the opposite side of Unaweep Canyon, look to the north for a large man-made opening. In the narrows of East Creek, cottonwood trees reach for the sky and provide stunning contrast to the red sandstone walls. These trees are fed by the seasonally flowing East Creek. As the eastern drainage for snowmelt and heavy monsoonal rains, East Creek runs east from top of Unaweep Canyon’s divide to the Gunnison River. The East Creek Day Use Area is managed by the BLM and is a great place for hiking and horseback riding. In the winter, keep your eyes open for Desert Big Horn Sheep nimbly perched on the slabs of sandstone.

Garfield rising to an elevation of 6765 feet (2062 m). The northern rim of the Grand Mesa can also be seen from this vantage point.
