Accessing Cabin:

Winter Access Route: In the winter months Winter Ridge area averages three to five feet of snow which closes Forest Road 2901. If this road is closed, travel south from the Ranger Station on Highway 31 approximately 400 yards to the plowed Forest Road 28. Turn right and follow road 28 for 21 miles to the Pole Butte Sno-park. (Note: Pole Butte is a state designated sno-park and a parking permit is required. Permits are not available in the Silver Lake area and should be obtained prior to arrival.) From there, either cross-country skiing eight miles or snowmobiling 14 miles on separately marked trails, will get you to your destination.

A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended to get to the Sno-park. Remember, travel into this remote location requires experience and advanced preparation. Be sure to notify someone of your plans including departure and return dates. Please carry extra clothing, bring a compass, topographic map and extra food and water. Skiing will take from three to six hours depending on weather conditions and your skill level. The trail is mostly flat, rising 1500 feet in elevation, but eight miles can be a challenging distance for many skiers.

Summer Access Route: From the Ranger Station, travel southeast through the town of Silver Lake toward Paisley on Highway 31 for approximately 18 miles to just beyond Picture Rock Pass. Turn west (right) onto Forest Road 2901 and from there signs will guide you another 18 miles to Fremont Point. The cabin is not accessible during the winter. It is accessed by hiking approximately 1/4 mile up a trail from the parking area.
