Outback Scenic Byway
Volcanic Formations, OR

In the Devils Garden Wilderness Study Area and right next to it at the Lava Mountain Squaw Ridge Wilderness Study Area, you can explore a variety of volcanic formations. Visitors can hike throughout lava flows and discover a multitude of different volcanic features, such as: sharp and convoluted lava, flat and smooth-surfaced lava, collapses, cinder cones, lava tubes, spires and squeeze-ups (lava forced through fissures). Care should be taken, as hiking on the sharp lava rock is tiring and hard on your boots. For the student of volcanism, this is the place to go. Green Mountain gives the visitor a panoramic view of the lava flows, cinder cones and desert landscape of the Fort Rock and Christmas Valley area.
