Pacific Coast Scenic Byway - Oregon
Fort Clatsop National Memorial, OR
The Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the winter of 1805-06 at Fort Clatsop after they completed their trail-blazing journey from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. The fort, named for the local Clatsop Indian tribe, would be their home for three months while they prepared for their return trip back to St. Louis the following spring. Nestled in a lush, forested setting, they hunted elk and deer for food, made buckskin clothes, traded with the Indians and prepared final maps and journals of their westward trip.
