Pacific Coast Scenic Byway - Oregon
Tillamook Head and Cove, OR

Tillamook Head is the northernmost headland on the Oregon coast. It provides excellent deer and elk habitat and splendid examples of old growth Sitka spruce and Western Hemlock trees. A beautiful hiking trail starts from the north side of Tillamook Head and winds across Tillamook Head to Indian Beach and Ecola State Park as it follows Lewis and Clark’s 1806 coastal exploration route. The cove is a tranquil beach setting offering surfing, fishing, and general relaxation.

The rotating beacon of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse was lit from 1881 to 1957. Located a mile out to sea, it aided sailors moving their vessels in and out of the mouth of the Columbia. The foghorn was powerful enough to be easily heard in Seaside and Cannon Beach. Access to the rock was difficult even on calm days. A derrick was used to lift and transfer crews and their supplies. The lighthouse, now used as a private burial urn vault, remains one of the most spectacular in the world.
