Pacific Coast Scenic Byway - Oregon
Eugene, OR
The first cabin, erected in 1846 by Eugene Franklin Skinner, served as a general trading post and authorized as a post office in 1850 was the first official recognition of the community. Now Eugene is Oregon’s third largest city and home to more than 140,000 people. The University of Oregon is located here and presents Eugene as a center of learning.
For a more cultural experience, there is the Hult Center, one of the finest performing arts centers on the West Coast. The Saturday Market is a weekly, open-air market featuring local artisans, performers, and international food. For a more local experience, there is also the WOW Hall, the community center for the performing arts, or the McDonald Theater, a community theater presenting plays, specials events and live concerts.
If you are the more outdoors type, then there is still plenty in Eugene to interest you! If you are not sure what to do, there are activities offered by the University of Oregon’s Outdoors program to help you out. If you want to explore on your own, you can visit the West Eugene Wetlands, or one of the many city parks. If you simply want to relax and gaze at the stars, then don’t forget to stop by the planetarium.
