Special Considerations

It is hard to find your way back to the byway from a stop-off in Ukiah. Here are the instructions to find your way back to the route:
* Go toward Pendleton (this is a left, from the way you came into town).
* About 1 mile out of town, go through Jct. 395.
* Get on to Forest Road 53.

Restrictions

Forest Road 53 is usually closed in the winter. A lot of places don't allow campfires in the summer.

Seasons

Best Time to Drive

Summer days are warm and dry with cool, star-studded nights. Winter storms create snow-sport conditions in the mountains. Rain is rare at lower elevations.

High Season

The busiest time of the season is in the summer, when the hills and mountains that surround the byway are rich with color.
