Elkhorn Scenic Byway
Visitor Services
You can find all the services you need in Baker City. Other towns on the byway can be small, making it hard to find fuel, lodging, etc. You will want to fill your tank at Baker City, and perhaps pack some food.

Special Considerations
- Gas is available only in Baker City and Sumpter.
- The route is not snowplowed between Granite and Anthony Lakes in the winter.
- There are a lot of free-ranging cattle. You may have to slow for them.
- Chipmunks and squirrels run around all over here; watch for them.
Restrictions
Part of Forest Road 73 is closed in the winter.
Forest fire danger is very high in the summer, so many campgrounds may not let you build fires.
Seasons
- Best Time to Drive
Part of the route is closed in the winter, so April-October is the best time to come to enjoy the entire route.
- High Season
Summer is when all the recreation areas are used the most.
