Sumter National Forest, SC
Rich in both history and natural resources, South Carolina's Francis Marion National Forest and Sumter National Forest encompass the range of the state's topography, wildlife, and vegetation. From the flat coastal plain in the east to the peaks of the southern Appalachian Mountains in the west, these forests cover 607,400 acres and draw more than 1.5 million visitors per year.
Sumter National Forest's highlights include the Chattooga River and the Foothills National Recreation Trail. Many other recreational opportunities can be found on the Sumter, including numerous hiking, horse and biking trails, fishing, picnic areas and more.
Francis Marion National Forest is characterized by a variety of habitats such as longleaf pine forests, black water swamps and salt marshes. It is a bird- and wildlife-watcher's paradise that also offers hiking, biking and horse trails, fishing, canoeing and camping.
