Savannah River Scenic Byway
Ninety Six National Historic Site, SC
As you commence the interpretive path leading to the battlefield, you will feel the years drop off and it may seem as though each step takes you further back in time. You leave behind you the parking lot, visitor center, and museum, only to find yourself realizing that even though it was over two-hundred years ago, a significant event happened right underneath your footsteps. You can climb the stairs of an overlook to gain a view of the entire battlefield and then continue to amble along the pathway that will take you over the mounds where armies laid siege and past the star-shaped fort where settlers waited.
Visitors to the museum will also find colorful exhibits depicting the life of the colonial settlers and the native people of the area. Mannequins dressed in the uniform of both Loyalists and British soldiers set the stage for the trip to the past. A small gift shop sells clay pipes, replicas of those used by early settlers, along with toy soldiers, books, and shirts.
