Savannah River Scenic Byway
Abbeville, SC
Named by the Huguenots who first settled this area, Abbeville offers a mixture of European roots and southern culture. The early European heritage is best seen in the Trinity Episcopal Church, just a block away from town square and open to the public. The Abbeville town square sits snuggly in the center of the historic district, near the Abbeville Opera House and courthouse, as well as many fine stores and restaurants.
For antique hounds and history buffs, this small sidetrip off the Byway will be well worth your time. Visit the Burt-Stark Mansion, a historic building that served as a meeting place for Jefferson Davis and his War Council. Plan to spend at least a day touring the historic downtown area. With dozens of antique stores, boutiques, historic churches, and cafes, you could easily spend a weekend.
