Loess Hills Scenic Byway
DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, IA

Each spring and fall, 500,000-plus snow geese and other waterfowl pause here while migrating. In the summertime, grassland birds breed here in numbers, and impressive wild turkeys will strut in season.

The visitor center has preserved artifacts from the paddlewheeler Bertrand which sank here in 1865 and was discovered a century later.
