Chinook Scenic Byway
Federation Forest State Park, WA

Half a century ago, Gov. Arthur Langley dedicated the 619 acres here as a state park. But the area wasn't developed much until pioneer educator Catherine Montgomery willed $89,000 to the Washington State Federation of Women's Clubs, which used the bequest to build the Catherine Montgomery Interpretive Center.

The facility offers visitors a geological tour of the White River and a live exhibit of plant and animal life in seven different ecosystems. A display describes the historic Naches trail, one of the first trails from eastern Washington to Puget Sound. Remains of the route exist throughout the grounds.
