Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway - Washington
Stonehenge Memorial, WA
Built by Sam Hill as a tribute to the soldiers of Kickitat County who lost their lives, the Stonehenge Memorial was the first monument in the United States to honor those killed in WWI. The structure is a full-scale replica of England's Neolithic Stonehenge. Hill was mistakenly informed that the original Stonehenge had been used as a sacrificial site, and so had constructed the replica to remind people "humanity is still being sacrificed to the god of war." This area now also includes monuments to the soldiers of Klickitat County who died in Korea and Vietnam.
