Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, MD
A compelling interface of marsh, open water, woodland, and farms, the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge has changed little since the mid-19th century, when freedom-seeking slaves faced the dangers of unknown tidal marshes and waterlogged forests floors. Embedded within the refuge boundaries are 17+ acres that make up the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park. The Park/Refuge campus is an excellent place to learn about the history and landscape along the entire byway and to enjoy a picnic, watch wildlife, take a bike tour and watch Bald Eagles soar over the Chesapeake Bay.
