Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway
Cambridge, MD

Cambridge is the county seat of Dorchester County, which was settled by whites, free blacks, and enslaved Africans in 1669. It has long been the commercial and industrial heart of this region, from its settlement in 1684 as a seaport community on the lower Choptank River, only a short sail away from the thriving Chesapeake Bay. From a past that includes the enslaved men and women who were brought here from the Caribbean, the Ivory Coast, and other regions of western Africa to the tumultuous upheavals of the 1960s Civil Rights movement, the Cambridge of today is a lively business and arts community drawing from a rich past.

Explore Cambridge’s vibrant maritime and cultural heritage and the scene Harriet Tubman's first rescue (that of her enslaved niece), through the museums, intrepretive panels, historic district tours, shopping opportunities, jazz and blues festivals, and river cruises offered in this fascinating Maryland city.
