Historic National Road - Maryland
The Piedmont, MD
The Historic National Road cuts across Maryland and passes through seven distinct geographical regions, including the Piedmont, which lies west of Baltimore City in between the Coastal Plain and Blue Ridge Mountains. In 1916, author and early automobile enthusiast Robert Bruce characterized a trip along the National Road through this area as Through Small But Interesting Places.
The Piedmont, with its gently rolling hills, is home to a number of small, attractive farms and country manor estates. Small pike towns, laid out in typical linear fashion, are found at
regular intervals.
