Historic homes, commercial buildings, bridges, spring houses, and farmsteads all contribute to a bucolic landscape character which has been targeted for protection by the State of Maryland's Rural Legacy Areas program in this area. This portion of the Byway passes through several linear pike towns of historic interest, including Middletown, Zittlestown, Boonsboro, Benevola and Funkstown. Many structures have been listed on the National Register and state historic inventory, and several historic districts have been established or are currently being planned.
