Cumberland C&O Canal National Historical Park Visitor Center, MD

The C&O Canal was built alongside the Potomac River between 1828 and 1850. In 1971, it became a National Historic Park. Today, the 184-mile towpath is popular with walkers and bicyclists and winds its way from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland. From the Byway, the trail can be picked up easily in Cumberland or in Hancock, home of the Canal's visitor center. Another place to explore the C&O Canal is at Canal Place in Cumberland, a certified state Heritage Area.
