Historic National Road - Maryland
Savage Mountains, MD
Little Savage Mountain rises just beyond Big Savage Mountain. The upper waters of the Little Savage River flow under the road between the two crests. A once-dense pine forest, which hid highwaymen awaiting travelers and was known locally as the “Shades of Death,” is gone, replaced by new growth from a planting program begun in the 1930s. Along this section of the National Road were camps established by General Braddock and George Washington on their ill-fated expedition to Fort Duquesne where their forces were routed and Braddock was killed.
