Effigy Mounds on Sentinel Ridge, WI
The Woodland Indians left behind hundreds of earthen mounds. Some were built in valleys while others, like those on Sentinel Ridge in Wyalusing State Park, were built on prominent bluffs. Many of the mounds are dome shaped while others are in the form of animals and birds. Effigy mounds served as burial places and may have been used to mark territories or served in religious ceremonies. Mound building seemed to have stopped by 1300 AD before any European exploration began.
