Great River Road
Bay City, WI

Bay City is located at the north end of Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River. The little town of Bay City has a bustling silica mine. The silica sand contains quartz and is used to make glass. Bay City looks across lake Pepin to the Minnesota bluffs. Resort cabins sprung up here during the 1920's and 30's. Visitors will now find a village park with picnic facilities and campgrounds along the riverside.

Just south of Bay City, visitors will catch a view of the Swedish Evangelical Tabor Lutheran Church. Swedish congregation of immigrants erected this church in 1898. The church experienced fire twice, but the congregation rebuilt it each time. The current structure dates from 1916. Although the church has many typical characteristics of churches, it has no distinct style, so architectural historians describe it as a "vernacular" building that reflects a traditional design modified by individual building style and materials.
