Great River Road
Stockholm, WI
Stockholm is a picturesque village backdropped by the steep bluffs on one side and overlooking Lake Pepin on the other. Stolkholm is unique as it was one of the few Swedish immigrant settlements in Wisconsin. Eric Peterson was the first to settle there in the early 1850's. Many friends and family joined him there.
Now visitors to this tiny community will find few changes. The Stockholm Museum is located in the old post office and visitors can still rent a room at the Merchant's Hotel that was built in 1867.
Just south of Stockholm archaeologists have pinpointed the site of one of the first European forts on the continent. Nicholas Perrot established Fort St. Antoine in 1686 here. Others have theorized that this was actually the site of Fort La Jonquiere built in 1750.
