Fort St. Antoine Historical Marker and Scenic Overlook, WI

In 1686, Nicolas Perrot established Fort St. Antoine for France. Two miles south of Stockholm, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of burned buildings, objects of glass, metal and stone. The wayside marker there provides a "closeup" view of the site of Fort St. Antoine. The fort was the first of several built at Lake Pepin to defend the land west of the Mississippi for France. It is conjectured that the fort may actually be Fort La Jonquiere of 1750. Archaeologists remain uncertain.
