Stonefield and Nelson Dewey State Park, WI

This estate was once home to an elaborate Gothic Revival mansion built by the state's first governor, Nelson Dewey. In 1868, after making a fortune from investments and law practice, Dewey established the large estate and called it Stonefield. In 1873, a fire burned the house down and Dewey later died penniless. Twenty years later a man named Newberry rebuilt the house in a much more modest style, but with the same floor plan. Nearby, on the land of Dewey's estate, lies a reconstructed turn-of-the-century community, named Stonefield Village in honor of Dewey and his accomplishments. Both the village and the house are open for tours in addition to the State Agricultural Museum found on this site.
