Great River Road
Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge, MN
Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge serves as a major stopover site for migratory waterfowl, particularly the Ring-Necked Duck. Many other marsh birds and grassland birds of note use the refuge, and a popular observation tower on Rice Lake is an excellent spot to view water-loving creatures on the lake. The best times for birdwatching are usually May and October. Hiking trails are located in the central portion of the refuge, and roads closed to motorized vehicles offer excellent opportunities to view wildlife undisturbed. In winter these trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, so bring your skis and explore.
