Lake Ophelia National Wildlife Refuge, LA

The Lake Ophelia National Wildlife Refuge was named for the largest body of water in the area. The refuge was established in 1988 to protect the important Mississippi/Red River floodplain ecosystem. The refuge was once part of a vast bottomland hardwood wilderness. Levees have changed hydrology, but the underlying ridge/Saale topography still supports a variety of habitat types.
