Passing briefly through the state of Alabama, the Natchez Trace Parkway takes you through a few of the historically important sites of the time.

From the Mississippi/Alabama border, start your journey north on the Alabama portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Day 1

  • Start: Freedom Hills Overlook

    Suggested time at this stop: 10 minutes

    After approximately 8 miles from the Mississippi/Alabama border, pull over to this overlook. At 800 feet above sea level, this is the highest point on the Alabama section of the Natchez Trace.

  • Stop 2: Buzzard Roost Spring

    From previous stop: 3 minutes / 4 mi (6.4 km)
    Directions:

    Continue north along the Natchez Trace.

    Take a short trail to Buzzard Roost Spring and read exhibits telling the story of Chicksaw Chief Levi Colbert.

  • Stop 3: Colbert Ferry

    From previous stop: 5 minutes / 8 mi (12.8 km)
    Directions:

    Continue north along the Natchez Trace,

    George Colbert operated a stand and ferry here and reportedly charged Andrew Jackson $75,000 to ferry his army across the river.

  • End: Rock Spring

    From previous stop: 4 minutes / 4 mi (6.4 km)
    Directions:

    Continue along the Natchez Trace Parkway, crossing the Tennessee River.

    Suggested time at this stop: 10 minutes

    Stop here to take the short, self-guiding trail along Colbert Creek.

    If you wish to tour the Tennessee part of the Parkway, continue north about 10 miles to the Alabama/Tennessee border and the start of the Tennessee part of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
