Special Considerations
The road is narrow with no shoulders; as a result, trailers, towed vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians are prohibited.
The road is closed after park hours.
Strollers are prohibited on the Crater Rim and Crater Vent Trails. Child carrier backpacks are available for loan at the Visitor Center. Pets are prohibited on all of the park trails.
Snow, ice accumulation, and/or severe thunderstorms may result in closing of the Volcano Road. Current road conditions are available by calling monument headquarters at 505-278-2201.
Seasons
High SeasonJuly is the busiest month at the park, with around 15,000 visitors. The majority of visitors arrive between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., sometimes causing 15-30 minute delays to tour the volcano.
Winter
The park is open all winter, weather permitting. The park will close if the state highway to the area is closed. The volcano road will close at the discretion of park staff.
