Seasons
- Best Time to Drive
Spring, summer, and fall are splendid times to visit. Ice climbing may be done in winter only.
- Fall
Fall is a great time to experience changing colors in the forest, but the byway may be closed early if the area is snowy. Call ahead for more information.
- High Season
Lee Vining Canyon road is the only road connecting the town of Lee Vining to Yosemite, and is therefore quite busy during the summer.
- Off Season
The byway is closed to automobile traffic during the winter months. It is a major destination for ice climbers during winter, however, who park at the gate and hike in.
- Spring
Spring is a great time to experience the rebirth of color in the area. Be sure to call ahead for conditions, as the byway may be closed as late as April or May.
- Summer
Summer is the peak season. The elevation makes the area much cooler than the surrounding area, providing an escape from high temperatures.
- Winter
The byway is closed around November and stays closed as late as may due to snow, call ahead before visiting. Ice climbers hike in during snowy months.
