Interstate 185
Pine Mountain, GA
Although today Pine Mountain is one of Georgia's primary tourism locations, it began as a small town named Chipley in 1882 when the railroad expanded north from Columbus to Pine Mountain. Thanks to President Franklin Roosevelt and Cason Callaway, it evolved from a simple farming community to become the gateway to the 14,000-acre resort known as Callaway Gardens.
Although Callaway Gardens is the main reason people visit Pine Mountain, the area holds a wide variety of sights and activities. Georgia's largest State Park, F.D. Roosevelt State Park, lies just to the east of Pine Mountain, where visitors can explore Roosevelt's Little White House and stables. Inside the town of Pine Mountain itself, the Pine Mountain Antiques Mall or the Wild Animal Safari would be a good place to start. Other attractions include the Big Bear Horse Farm, Butts Mill Farm, and the variety of small shops in downtown Pine Mountain and Chipley Village.
