Callaway Gardens, GA

Twenty years before opening the Callaway Gardens resort in May of 1952, Cason and Virginia Callaway began pursuing their dream of preserving and cultivating Georgia's native flora. After buying thousands of acres of cotton-depleted land, they endeavored to turn their enchantment with the area into a private retreat for family and friends.

Filled with a lush, pristine array of natural beauty ranging from pure, crystaline springs to the rare prunifolite azalea, their initial dream spread from that of a personal retreat to a desire to share their paradise with the world. That dream became a reality in 1952 when they opened IDA Cason Gardens to the Public.

Since then, the resort has continued to grow, though all the while maintaining its original devotion to Georgia's natural beauty. Today, golf enthusiasts can test their skills on 63 holes of golf: three 18-hole courses and a nine-hole course for those looking to play a shorter game. Visitors can stroll through five acres of greenhouses and gardens, including 22,000 square feet of indoor floral display area. Those interested in personal gardens may visit the 7.5-acre vegetable garden featured on PBS's "Victory Garden," with over 400 varieties of crops. Finally, for those seeking some one-on-one time with the wilderness, the Discovery Bike Trail follows a 10-mile route through the entire park.

With so much to do and explore, Callaway Gardens takes its rightful place along the Interstate 185 Scenic Byway.
