Journey Through Hallowed Ground Byway
National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, MD
Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first American-born person to be canonized as a saint. As founder of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph's, she was a leader in both Catholic education and the care of widowed mothers. She founded the first free Catholic School for girls staffed by Sisters in the US. St. Seton also established orphanages and worked tirelessly to keep them running.
The Shrine includes the Basilica, a visitors center, the Stone House (1750), the White House (1810), and the Mortuary Chapel.
