Alabama's Coastal Connection
Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary, AL
The sanctuary consists of 164 acres of maritime forest, marshes, dunes, a lake, swamp, and beach. Peering over sand dunes along the beach provides a scene not too different than one seen by early explorers: twisted pines, scrub oaks, glistening white sand, and blue-green gulf waters crashing on shore. Multiple walking trails, some handicap accessible, give birders access to interpretive signage as well as miles of habitat for spotting neo-tropical migrants.
